How you get there: one stop
There is no nonstop flight from Australia to Mumbai, so every option connects once through a hub. The good news is that plenty of airlines compete for this route, and that competition keeps fares honest. The main choices:
- Singapore Airlines via Singapore (from both Sydney and Melbourne)
- Qantas via Singapore
- Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur
- Thai Airways via Bangkok
- Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong
- Emirates, Etihad and Qatar Airways via Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha

Choosing your connection
The hub you fly through shapes the trip. The Southeast Asian hubs (Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok) often give the shortest total journey to Mumbai, while the Gulf hubs (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha) are frequent and competitive and usually offer strong baggage allowances. When to book for the lowest fare
Mumbai fares follow the same seasonal pattern as the rest of India:
- December to mid-January is the peak — Australian summer holidays plus Indian wedding season. Book four to six months ahead if you travel then.
- Fares spike around Diwali (8 November in 2026); lock your ticket well before.
- The cheaper windows are roughly February to March and September to early October.
