There is now a nonstop option
For years, every Australia–India trip meant a connection. That has changed. At the time of writing, Air India flies nonstop between Delhi and Sydney, with a flight time of around 13.5 hours. There is also a nonstop Delhi–Melbourne service, which is due to increase to daily from September 2026.
A nonstop flight is the quickest way home and avoids the risk of a missed connection. Schedules on this route do change, so check the current days and times when you book, or ask us and we will confirm what is flying.
The one-stop airlines
Nonstop is not always the cheapest, and it is not available every day. Most travellers still fly Sydney to Delhi with one stop, and the competition between hubs is exactly what keeps fares down. The main options:
- Emirates via Dubai
- Qatar Airways via Doha
- Etihad via Abu Dhabi
- Singapore Airlines via Singapore
- Malaysia Airlines via Kuala Lumpur
- Thai Airways via Bangkok
A typical one-stop journey runs around 16 to 20 hours all-in, depending on the connection. The "best" airline shifts constantly with price and season, so the carrier that was cheapest last year is not automatically the one to book again.
When to book Sydney to Delhi
Timing matters more on this route than almost anything else, because demand is so seasonal:
- Avoid December to mid-January. This is the single most expensive window, combining Australian summer school holidays with India's wedding season. If you must travel then, book four to six months ahead.
- Watch the Diwali spike. Fares climb sharply in the weeks before Diwali (8 November in 2026). For a Diwali trip, lock your fare a couple of months out.
- The cheaper windows are the shoulder seasons, roughly February to March and September to early October, before the festival rush.
For off-peak travel, booking around ten to fourteen weeks ahead tends to land the best fare. This corridor has fewer flights than the UK or US routes into India, so bargains are thinner and early booking pays off.

Baggage: check it before you book on price alone
Families flying to Delhi rarely travel light. The cheapest online fare often comes with the smallest baggage allowance, and buying extra bags at the airport is the most expensive way to carry weight.
